Biography

After acquiring a Bachelor's degree in History and Archaeology in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and then a Master's degree in Archaeology, Art and Culture with specialization in Classical Archaeology in the same institution, Maria Roumeliotou joined the Université Libre de Bruxelles and CReA-Patrimoine as part of the doctorate program in History, Art History and Archaeology, under the supervision of Dr. Vasiliki Saripanidi.

Her research aim to explore the sociopolitical organisation of the Macedonian Kingdom from the reign of Alexander I to the death of Philip II (ca. 498-336 BC), addressed on the basis of funerary evidence. It is primarily focused on the study of synchronic and diachronic variation within and between different cemeteries in the territory of the Macedonian kingdom. The interpretation of the archaeological finds will be based on recent theoretical approaches of social complexity and power, while at the same time, the existing historical studies and the written sources will be combined to produce a much more nuanced understanding of power structures within the Temenid Kingdom.

The interest on funerary archeology was first initiated during her Master’s thesis, which was about the post-burial rituals in the ancient cemeteries of the present-day Greek Macedonia from Archaic to Hellenistic period.

Research area

Funerary archaeology, the Classical period in northern Greece.
